The Olympic Games

Wow! The other day I went to school and got some of the international students to translate two sentences that I had written informing people that the Olympic Games were starting and that the Opening Ceremony was last night. It was amazing. I stuck the paper up on the wall and people noticed. Some of the sentences were also translated thanks to Cucumis.org and also Hyunwoo Sun of KC101. By the end I had English, Chinese, Arabic, Vietnamese, Korean, Afrikaans, Indonesian, Greek and German as well as one that represents me that is Hawaiian.

There has been a lot of conflict over these games because of Tibet issues and freedom of speech in China. One particular story interested me immensely about a Chinese human-rights activist called 胡佳 (Hú Jiā). You can watch an Australian documentary on him and other issues relating to this on this Four Corners documentary. There was also a discussion on SBS's Insight program about the games and the safety of it and the issues surrounding it.

The ceremony last night, however, was great. I hope that the peace chant that the kids did last night will be impacting to many people.
